FMS makes B-schools Think!

The Faculty of Management Studies, New Delhi organized its paper-writing competition "Think!" in association with The Hindustan Times. The event was open to management students all over India and abroad, and to corporates below the age of 30. Original and unpublished entries were invited in three areas: Marketing, Finance, and Strategy.

The response was amazing, both in terms of the number of entries and the quality of participation. About 350 entries were received, which is an unprecedented number. This is even more notable because this was the inaugural edition of the event. The top three IIMs - A, B and C alone accounted for more than one-third of the entries. IIM-Bangalore sent the maximum number of entries. Other B-Schools to participate included ISB, IIM-L, XLRI, SP Jain, NITIE, ICFAI, etc. Overseas participation included corporate entries from GE London. Corporate entries also came from employees of ICICI Bank, Infosys, etc.

The marketing paper, which had the topic, "Relationship Marketing: Old wine in new bottle?" received the highest number of entries. The finance paper had the topic "Managing the volatility of global financial markets" and strategy paper, " Strategic Alliances: Long lasting marriages or temporal infatuations?"

Five entrants in each category qualified for the final presentation of their paper, which was held on 27th of January at the FMS campus. With laptops, desktops, mobile phones, and a lot of prestige at stake, the finalists were all fired up.

What followed was a marathon day of presentations, spiced with challenging questions from the judges and the audience.

In the evening, it was time to announce the winners. Ajay Raina of Indian Institute of Science won the first prize in the finance category, beating two IIM-A students. V. S. Vivekanand of IIM Indore finished second. In marketing, Kalpana Tyagi of R. A. Podar Institute of management, Jaipur, was first, followed by Jai Advani of IIM-Bangalore. In strategy, it was time for the home crowd to rejoice as Pavanjit S. Bedi of FMS took the top spot, beating Sunil Kumar Ayalasomayajula of ISB, Hyderabad, who finished second.

It was'nt over yet. The three winners then had a tussle for the laptop, which went to Ajay Raina of IISc. The other two winners won desktops. The runner-ups were given Nokia mobile phones. Vir Sanghvi, editor of The Hindustan Times, handed over the prizes. The winners have still more to rejoice, as their papers will be published in The Hindustan Times.
