IIMC student wins Scholarship
to the EURO Summer Institute at Turkey

Sethuraman J., a Fellow Program student from I.I.M. Calcutta has been selected as the EURO - IFORS fellow for the prestigious ESI (EURO Summer Institute) XXII on Optimization and Data Mining to be held at Ankara, Turkey, from July 9-25, 2004. Sethuraman is the only person from the developing countries who has been awarded this scholarship.

The ESI is organized jointly by the International Federation of Operational Research (IFORS) and the Association of European Operational Research (EURO) Societies. Sethuraman was selected jointly by the Developing Countries Committee of IFORS and the Chair of the Program Committee of the EURO Summer Institute.

The scholarship was offered on the basis of a paper - "Soft Computing techniques for high dimensional problems: An illustration with bond rating prediction" - written by Sethuraman. The motivation for this paper came from two doctoral level course projects in "Fuzzy Sets and Systems" and "Advanced Fuzzy Sets and Systems ", both offered at IIMC by Prof. Asim Pal.

The EURO Summer and Winter Institutes (ESWI) are organized to establish a network of promising young O. R. scientists who will continue to collaborate as a working group in the future. The participation is limited to a group of about 25 people. The EURO Summer Institute on Optimization and Data Mining will have lectures by invited speakers, but the main emphasis will be on the participants' presentations and on discussions on the papers.
