"Confluence" Conquered by IIM Calcutta The global management geniuses from Wharton, Carnegie Mellon and MIT Sloan had to bow down to the might of IIM Calcutta, which ended up the runaway winners at Confluence, the annual B School meet organized by IIM Ahmedabad. Yet another evidence of the institutes' unrivalled expertise at strategic and financial management, performance this time also highlighted IIM Calcutta's focus on a pragmatic approach supported by quantitative arguments. A paradigm approach in the academic policy, faculty is now concentrating more on realistic constraints and environmental knowledge rather than constricting the curriculum to theoretical erudition. They believe that even though the importance of strong fundamentals cannot be over emphasized enough, the present scenario demands much more in terms of contextual and domain based proficiency. Albeit introduction of these factors increases the inputs extracted from the student body they are critical to the sustenance of global standards that the institute pursues. Boasting of a series of legendry quizzers, the present lot like Gokulnath Pai admits that facts generally considered, as trivia are more often than not the differentiating factors between a standard and cutting edge analysis of any situation. Following another victory in Bizquizitive at Confluence, famous quizmaster Mr. Siddhartha Basu remarked, "As usual, we have a team from IIM Calcutta up there." Another dimension brought to the forefront is that of a discussion based culture at IIMC vis-à-vis the more standard lecture based methodology propagated by most other institutes. For instance another member of the winning team Gautam Mago says, "The recognition of an award and cash prizes (worth Rs 1.56 lakhs) did not deter us from discussing issues and accepting criticism from peers back home. In fact the atmosphere indulges students in deliberation over almost every issue ranging from current affairs to ethical insights." This again is thanks to a strong initiative by the faculty. Professors right from day one encourage the formation of opinion amongst the students on any and every matter. They also inculcate a sense of responsibility that stems from relegation of control and the freedom to make decisions. A complete transfer of authority to the student council is probably the biggest evidence to this. Management thus is not taught at IIMC it is imbibed as a virtue, assimilated as an art and learnt from experience. Contributed by: - |
