Synchronization of IT strategy with Business Goals

All businesses today realize the necessity of knowing what is happening today, TODAY. Inevitably to achieve this goal everyone has tried to integrate IT into their business. Keeping this in mind, the students of Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, IIT Bombay, in association with Satyam Computer Services, in their endeavor to bring industry problems to the front, organized a two-day seminar christened “Synchronization of IT Goals with Business Goals” on the 8th and 9th of February 2003. This was the part of a larger series called Continuum.

Eminent speakers like Mr. Sivakumar, CEO ITC-IBD, Mr. Gopal Madnani, CEO Baan, Mr. Prasad Kulkarni, KPMG, Mr. D. B. Phatak, Head KReSIT, IIT Bombay, Mr. Vijay Prasad, Satyam, Mr. Vinay Krishna, Microsoft, Mr. S. R. Chowdhary, IBM consulting, Mr. Arun Gupta, Pfizer, Mr. Arun Pande, Colgate-Palmolive and Mr. K. R. Chandrashekhar, GTL Ltd., provided valuable inputs from their experiences of implementing IT to achieve their business goals.

The speakers covered the topic from the point of view of a strategist, consultant, implementer, and finally, as a user. The theme of the seminar centered on the need to use IT as a tool to implement a defined business plan. Judicious selection of the technology as regards its simplicity, scalability, flexibility and ability to integrate should be undertaken. How the individuals in the organization must first accept the utility of the tool before it can be implemented.

The seminar helped not only the student delegates appreciate the importance of IT and its judicious use but also helped industry delegates better understand the use of IT as a tool for the larger business goal.

The earlier chapters of Continuum were on Marketing and Human Resources held in late 2002, with large industry and student participation.
