Dr. Christopher Lovelock visited SPJIMR, Mumbai

Dr. Christopher Lovelock visited SPJIMR campus on March 6, 2004. He spent many hours interacting with the faculty; there were many discussion points over the 5 hours he spent at the institute. Some of the salient ones were: -

  • SPJIMR uses Dr Christopher Lovelock's book for its Services Course, as its main course text. As also the faculty uses a lot of articles and cases written by him.

  • Dr Lovelock talked about his recent research work: He says, we have always taught our students, how services are different from goods; the generalizations are not necessarily true for all services. Services now dominates many economies, its such a diverse field that one needs to focus on differences within various sectors of services.

  • He has expressed interest in partnering with faculty of SPJIMR for his forthcoming book.

Author, teacher, and consultant, Dr. Christopher Lovelock is recognized around the world as a leading authority on service management. Currently an adjunct professor at the Yale School of Management and principal of Lovelock Associates, he has worked with service companies in a broad array of industries. A frequent speaker at meetings of professional associations, corporations, and nonprofit groups, he has given seminars on six continents and can present in French as well as English.

Christopher Lovelock grew up in Great Britain and graduated from the University of Edinburgh with an M.A. in economics and a B.Com. degree. His early business experience included two years in advertising with J. Walter Thompson Co. in London and two years in corporate planning with Canadian Industries Ltd. in Montreal. Subsequently, he obtained an MBA from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from Stanford University, where he was also a postdoctoral fellow.

Dr. Lovelock's distinguished academic career has included 11 years on the faculty of the Harvard Business School (1973-84), two years as a visiting professor at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland (1990-92), and short-term appointments at MIT, Stanford, and Berkeley. In 1996, he was a visiting professor at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France, teaching in its MBA and executive programs. He has also taught at several other French institutions, including the Reims Management School and the Theseus Institute in Sophia Antipolis. In 1999 he was a visiting professor at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. His research and teaching focus on creating service value, the role of information technology, integrating the marketing, operations, and human resource functions, international services, and strategies for service leadership.

A prolific and award-winning author, Christopher Lovelock has written or co-authored more than two dozen books (including Services Marketing in Asia and Principles of Service Marketing and Management, both published in 2002), some 60 articles, and over 100 teaching cases. His work has been translated into Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. He serves on the board of advisors of the Information Technology Services Marketing Association (ITSMA), on the Comité Scientifique (visiting committee) of Reims Management School, and on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Service Industry Management, Journal of Service Research, Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly, Marketing Management, and The Service Industries Journal. He is also active in the American Marketing Association.
