CRISIL - Managing Future Thought

When the HR Director of the country's premier Credit Rating Agency speaks on strategy, policy and future trends at one of the premier B-schools in the country, it makes news. Mr. Murali Aiyer from Crisil was at S. P. Jain Institute of Management & Research on 27th of August to talk about "New Work, New World and New Education, The Three Must Meet". The topic was paraphrased from the statements of the renowned Marketing guru Tom Peters. Mr. Aiyer initiated the discussion with a brief explanation behind the concept and driving forces behind the 3rd in the series of Crisil Young Thought Leader's (CYTL) Competitions. CYTL is aimed at getting best-of-breed fresh ideas from second year participants in Management courses, relating to fields such as finance, economics and equity. Crisil intends that such competitions will foster the innovative spirit amongst future managerial talent within the country.

After this, the students were introduced to the actual topic for discussion. Mr.Aiyer introduced the topic in a sublime manner, hinting that while the presentation was largely culled from his own ideas, they actually formed a gamut of revolutionary thought that is sweeping the industry currently, whenever talks of future vision and strategy arose. The discussion was replete with phenomenal insights into the working of a decision maker's mind... "we do not know when things will get back to normal, in fact, we no longer know what normal means". This represents the paradox that is prevalent in the minds of many managers who have to make spot decisions based on tit-bits of relevant data that they have been able to piece together.

Mr.Aiyer felt that the communication per se would be the key to all ventures and forays in new fields of growth and development. The mutual exchange of ideas and beliefs will be facilitated only through clear and effective communication. He also felt that the Continuing of Adult education, online, will be the single largest industry in the next 30 years… since we are moving towards a Knowledge empowered society. He also mooted the idea that "work would be a Personal Choice" and that momentum and Push would be the "Force Multiplier" in the execution of ideas. Mr.Aiyer's primary concern was that anyone who was in the decision-making chair needed to get connected to his area of interest in an extremely involved manner.

For those of the students who would be venturing into the services industry, he had but a single piece of advice. "Always keep yourself abreast of latest happenings and perpetually have a Service Mindset." This would enable them to evaluate alternatives in a more calculated manner. He quoted Louis Pasteur's famous words "Chance favours the prepared mind" to emphasize this point. He felt that all this would be possible only if the person who was at the helm of affairs was amenable to self-evaluation and continuous self-improvement. Each individual treating himself as a business could make this possible. Having an alternative plan and route to success, a personal vision and roadmap, a personal ideas book... all this made getting to targeted goals much easier.

The entire discussion primarily aimed at getting the managers, CFOs and CEOs of tomorrow to prepare themselves to see the big picture and thus to remain objective in any evaluative scenario. Also the need to emphasize the importance of a collective mindset was termed as being of primary importance. Initiative - which has been the stepping-stone to all success stories in the past, has another friend in the belief "If it needs to get done, then it is up to me". All in all the strategy to manage the self effectively so as to get first-mover advantage in grasping any future opportunity was outlined to a nicety. And the secrets to success were brought out of the closet. Initiative, hard work and constant application - are no longer textbook entries but real world tools which if applied can change the society we live in, for the better.
