Foreign Trip of the Family Managed Business (FMB) Program Students

S. P. Jain Institute of Management & Research, the top 10 management institute in India, sensing the need to impact management practices in family managed business have pioneered the Family Managed Business Programme for young family business managers for business leadership and self-development. The institute has been running this course for the last 6 years. The duration of the FMB course is 18 months. Out of the number of features unique to the FMB programme, the one most looked forward to by all the students has been the 20 days Foreign Trip at the end of the programme.

The Foreign Trip consists of visits to some of the advanced and fast-growing economies of Asia. This is done with the objective of giving the students wider exposure and to help them acquire a perspective to learn from the growth in this area. This also helps them develop a mindset which will stand them in good stead in this era of growing globalization.

The countries visited by the FMB students, who finished the course, were Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China & Thailand. The objective of the trip was to widen the perspective of the students, and give them an international exposure. The learning & exposure that they gained from this trip will help them in the long-run, especially when they would want to have any business dealings with the above mentioned countries. According to the students the USP of the program is being able to meet various companies & people in the countries visited by them, which helps them in widening their perspective.

The units visited by the students were diverse in nature and ranged from large multinational corporations to small family owned and managed units. The group also had the opportunity to visit the Chinese operations of some well-known Indian companies like Essel Propack and Ranbaxy and a chance to visit some of the earliest multinational Indian companies set up by the Aditya Birla group in Thailand.

This time, along with the plant visits, there were some interactions planned with students in Universities in most of the countries. The universities visited by the FMB students are as follows: -

  • Temple University, Japan
  • National Chengchi University, Taiwan
  • Yonsei University, Korea
  • School of Management, Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand

The group also had a chance to interact with Mr. S. K. Verma, Deputy General Director of the India Taipei Association and with the Indian Embassy officials in Japan and Korea also.

Inspite of a very interesting and a fruitful trip, the unanimous recommendation of all the students is that countries like Malaysia, Singapore & Indonesia should also be included in the foreign trip program, as the business in these countries are very similar to India, and industry focused.

Family Managed Business Program is very beneficial to the participants in the long run; thereby making them better businessmen.
