"Your right is to work only. Be not instrumental in making your actions bear fruit, nor let your attachment be to inaction."

- The Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 2, Verse 47

The realization that one must derive one's complete motivation from the process of work alone and strive towards a less outcome oriented approach in life is by far one of the biggest challenges people face the world over today.

In an attempt to set off a process of self-realization and purposeful thinking, the participants of SPJIMR were taken to the ashram of Swami Viditatmanandji at Kayavarohan in Baroda, Gujarat on the 8th and 9th of November, 2003 for an interactive session on Self-Management. The Gita Shibir forms a part of the non-classroom learning for the Post-Graduate Programme.

Vedanta discusses reality devoid of emotion and this it is believed is necessary for objective learning. The Bhagvad Gita was specially chosen on account of the analogous relationship between the Battlefield and Life and more importantly on account of its timeless issues- those of constant conflict, decision-making, responsibility and leadership.

Self-Management is about being in control and at peace with one's self says Swamiji. Dealing with conflict at the workplace and in personal life by subduing our impulses towards success and failure is imperative to view life neutrally with a larger perspective. A lively discussion on concepts like Universal Ownership, Contentment and Self Acceptance brought out a lot of ideas and perspectives. Swamiji also added that it is only when we can take complete responsibility of our actions can we gracefully accept the outcome. Humility and Gratitude and the urge to give back in a measure at least equal to what the world has given to us should be the intent of every human being. Swamiji reiterated his belief that to be a good manager one necessarily needed to be a good leader. It is only exemplary conduct and conviction, which commence this journey onto the path to true leadership.

The focus at SPJIMR has always been at developing a balanced IQ, EQ and SQ in its participants through holistic learning. It is the enhancement of Emotional and Spiritual Quotients, the Dean believes which set apart the Best Managers. Values, Ethics and furthering Soft Skills have constantly been of principal importance to the SPJIMR fraternity and to ideally reach a stage wherein the adherence to the afore mentioned become a part of life becomes one of the focal objectives.

In the humdrum of everyday routine, one often fails to comprehend the meaning and purpose of life. The Shibir achieved its intention of making people stop, reflect and perhaps rethink on their courses of action. This singular experience, enriching and invigorating in the highest degree will be one that the participants will treasure for a long time to come.
