Press Release The event that the entire HR practitioners and the NHRDN fraternity in Bhubaneswar had been looking forward eagerly was the first national level seminar organized by the local chapter of NHRDN in collaboration with the Xavier Institute of Management. The main issue for the seminar was about "Leveraging Competencies for Competitive Advantage". On the 20th of December, 2003 the opening ceremony at 9:00 am, had the who's who of industry and acadamecia in Dr. Santrupt Misra (Director HR, Aditya Birla Group and National President of NHRDN), Mr. Anand Nayak (Head HR, ITC and President of NHRDN, Eastern Region), Fr E. Abraham (Director, XIMB), Dr. Biswajit Pattnaik (President NHRDN, Bhubaneswar Chapter) and literally towering over others with his height was our chief guest the honourable Industry minister of Orissa, Mr. K. V. Singh Deo. There were some interesting and anecdote filled speeches in the opening address and the keynote address delivered by Mr. K. V. Singh Deo and Dr. Santrupt Misra, respectively. Both stressed on the importance of competency in industry, business, nation building and politics using examples ranging from McDonalds to the Indian cricket team. The first plenary session had Mr. Bikramjit Moitra, Asst. VP, HR and talent engagement of Infosys and Mr. R. Vidyasagar, Director HR, I-Flex talking about competency building, designing, implementing and management and HR leveraging techniques in IT organizations. Mr. Moitra even presented a slide show to exemplify this practice in Infosys. The next plenary session witnessed Mr. G. P. Rao, VP HR of JK Tyres chairing the session on competency management systems in manufacturing organizations. The other speakers in this session were Mr. Anand Nayak from ITC and Bimal Rath, VP Group HR, Tata Sons. This was a very engaging discussion due to variety of ways of implementing competency models in manufacturing industries where the scenario changes from cigarette and paper manufacturing ITC to steel and locomotive manufacturing in the Tata Group. Mr. Nayak seamlessly incorporated a presentation on values and competency building in ITC to highlight these points. The lunch was like interacting with names you have heard of and read about from the world of HR and organizational development. With Mr. R. Chandrashekhar of Reliance Infocomm and Dr. Santrupt Misra taking time to mingle with the students of XIMB, it was an occasion to cherish. The third plenary session of the day had Mr. Chandrashekhar, President HR, Reliance Infocomm and Mr. Parekh of Tata Sons talking about competency management in service organizations. Mr. Chandrashekhar's examples ranged from the mundane to the abstract like playing football on the moon and it was all done while presenting a slide show. He used examples from the history of Reliance to exemplify how competency develops throughout a group where best practices a way of life. The final plenary session had Prof. (Mrs.) Snigdha Pattnaik, Coordinator of HR dept. of XIMB, chairing the session on critical evaluation of the various competency models and practices. The other speakers in this session were Mr. Bimal Rath from Tata Sons, who is also a visiting faculty to XIMB and Mr. Arunav Banerjee, management consultant from AAA Consulting. This was a very engaging discussion due to aspects presented by an industry practitioner and an industry consultant. Mr. Rath gave an excellent presentation on leadership development and its synergy with competency models. Finally, the day was wrapped up with the valedictory session, which saw Mr. K. K. Gupta, CEO of MCL (one of the sponsors of this event) speaking about the CEO perspective and Mr. Debi Prasad Das, Manager HRD, Infosys and one of the key members of NHRDN, Bhubaneswar chapter, talking on the steps taken by the chapter and the path ahead. The day was wrapped up with a happy note with all the efforts of the student volunteers from XIMB, NHRDN members and XIMB fraternity leading to a fruitful culmination of this novel event. The members of the HR community then moved on to an evening of bonhomie and a cocktail dinner hosted by XIMB. This was an ideal platform to exchange and consolidate ideas plus catch up with old colleagues, peers and friends. Contributed by - |
