Second Foundation Day Lecture by Mr. Arun Maira
at XIM Bhubaneswar

Don't try to Impress. Let Others get impressed by You.
Don't go to teach, but to learn.

These were the thoughts expressed by Mr. Arun Maira, international authority on leadership and chairman of the Boston Consultancy Group (India). The occasion was the Second Foundation Day Lecture (completion of 17 years of XIMB) at Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, where Mr. Maira was delivering the keynote address to a packed audience.

Addressing the assembled students and guests, Mr. Maira impressed upon them the fact that they should always ask themselves what drives them in life. Aggregate salaries are important, but they should not be the only measure of achievement. What is it that you want to create? That should be your driving force.

Talking on leadership, Mr. Maira reiterated that the qualities of a good are lifelong learning and reinvention since the means and skills of a successful manager. This is especially true in today's world since the forces of Globalization, Telecommunication and Democracy have completely shifted the previous benchmarks. By accelerating spread of ideas, facilitating connectivity and empowering individual rights, these three forces have come together to shift the goalposts. There is no one specific style of leadership that will fit everybody and every situation.

Talking in the context of India, Mr. Maira said that we need a million managers to be able to build the India of our dreams. The role of these managers will be, not only to help the people to light their cause, but also to help them develop and thrive against any breeze that may threaten them. The path to success for India should be one of inclusive growth where the interests of all whose needs have hitherto been ignored are addressed.

He concluded by asking everybody to find the specific idea that they had of their successful India. There will be ideas at different level, but an effective leader will be one who can identify the common thread running among all of them and implement it.

Earlier in the evening, Mr. Rajive Kaul, Chairman Board of Directors, XIMB, announced the institution of the Ravi Sharma Gold Medal for the Best All-Round Student of every graduating PGDM batch, in memory of Ravi Sharma a student of the 2005 PDGM batch who tragically lost his life at Puri.
