Press Release: 28th September, 2004
Talk by B. Muthuraman, MD - Tata Steel
At XIM, Bhubaneswar

"Vision without action is just a dream,
Vision with action can change the world."

It was simply amazing to watch people stream into the XIMB auditorium carrying copies of Businessworld that had our speaker for the day on its cover page.
Yes, Mr. B. Muthuraman, the MD of Tata Steel was there in person.

Mr. Muthuraman, who is always keen to meet students and interact with them, made a dashing entry and it was quite evident that this alumnus of IIT-Madras and XLRI, Jamshedpur was a man of action.

His speech was peppered with anecdotes from books like Alice in Wonderland, quotes by Jack Nicklaus and golfing stories from across the world. His prime objective was to stress upon the importance of having a vision and some tangible goals. He said that it's never easy for young people but they must try such envisioning exercises that can be mentally invigorating. He summed it up through the quotation, "To define the destination of your life is difficult; the joy is not in reaching your destination but the journey itself".

Further, talking about B-school students, he advised them to treat their prospective careers like a marathon race. He reiterated that the key is to finish a race while to treat one's career like a 100m dash is one of the biggest mistakes one can commit. Mr. Muthuraman said in today's world of instant coffee, young MBA grads often look for instant gratification in their careers, which causes burnout.

He said that Tata Steel always gives importance to how prospective recruits have handled failures in their life and thus lay stress on mindset and learning attitude. He said the fundamental of being a good CEO comes from the ability to handle failures.

According to him, the development of future managers lay in focusing on:

  • Skill sets
  • Attitude to win
  • Decision making ability
  • Empathy

Mr. Muthuraman concluded by reminding us that no B-school curriculum teaches students how to prepare for the life that is a marathon. He challenged teachers to develop courses, which will groom such marathon runners who will not only finish the race but also race with an attitude to win at the end.
