At XIM, Bhubaneswar

Create value. Share a Vision.

The students of Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar had a CEO talk by Mr. T. Hari, Senior Vice-President (HR) of SATYAM on the 14th July 2004. He gave an insight into the company's profile, organizational structure and the practices followed in the IT industry in general and SATYAM in particular.

Satyam is a fast growing company having 101 customers in Fortune 500 companies and one of the very few companies that run the entire data department of a company by itself. It is also one of the fastest growing companies having reached the 4th position in 2004 from the 15th position in 1996 amongst the IT companies. It is spread over 18 nationalities and 45 countries and has about 15,680 associates. It is, however, not looking at products and wants to concentrate only on IT services.

However, Satyam also has an attrition rate of 3.8 % (quarterly) and a forced attrition rate of 5%. This is a trend that is prevalent in almost all top IT firms in India. Satyam is a neutral company, as it is not aligned to anyone. Rather it uses the technology as required by the customers. It is also a well-connected organization. It has a strong virtual connection and also conducts learning web-seminars so that people do not loose touch with the current practices. It provides Leadership Development Programme, knowledge forums for its employees and does a lot of R&D. It can boast of 83 publications and has applied for 14 patents.

Satyam offers 4 different kinds of jobs - business development, delivery function, consultancy and support groups. The support group recruits the highest number of MBA's. Delivery function recruits only MBA's who have specialized in systems. It has an innovative hiring system with a certified interview panel based on the global sourcing model. It also follows the policy of employee appraisal. This however focuses on performance, not potential. However an incentive of 150% of the basic pay is given to the star performers in India and outside India it is 100%.

Mr. Hari stressed that Satyam relies on frequent feedbacks, which are both emotional and behavioral. For this, it uses 14 different variables from 2 different levels where rankings also form an important part of the appraisal system. Ranking is done for groups, projects and circles. Apart from these aspects it is enabling livelihood to the youth and the single woman. It had the hand made paper project to help women. Satyam regularly organizes stress management workshops for the spouses of the employees. Thus, Satyam can also boast of having one of the classiest campuses as they believe in a mixture of nature and technology.

Hence, Satyam is on an accelerated turbo and wants to make an impact on the 6 inches around and not the world. All this information shared by Mr. Hari not only informed us about Satyam but also answered a lot of questions pertaining to the recent trends and developments in the IT industry. He also clarified as to what kind of profile of B-school graduates would interest IT companies.
