Skill City: The Toughest Test for Softest Skills
Xpressions 2004 at XIM, Bhubaneswar

The months of October and November at Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar witnesses a sudden change in the mood of the people. Festivity becomes the flavour of the hour. The demanding schedule of classes and assignments is replaced by a hectic activity of another kind. The air is filled with excitement and a sense of urgency as final touches are given to months of preparation for this festival. This year the students had more reasons to rejoice as the festival has been split into two parts - the literary part called Xpressions held from 2nd to 4th of October and the cultural part called Dhwani to be held in the first week of November.

Xpressions 2004 saw stupendous participation from various B-schools all over the country in various events like quizzes, paper presentations and business games. Amidst all this euphoria, the jewel in the crown was the newly developed game "Skill City". This was undoubtedly the most acclaimed and fun filled game in the fest.

Skill City was developed in the year 2003 by the students of XIMB as a challenge for testing the soft skills of aspiring and working managers. There were many games to test the prowess of managers in fields of finance, systems etc. but none for the all-important soft skills. Skill City is played over two days and has several modules that check skills like team building, creativity, cognitive ability, leadership and coordination to name a few. The game is designed around a central theme into which the modules are carefully woven to impart a sense of completeness to the game as well as provide a comprehensive and evolving pattern for the participants to comprehend the main objectives of the games.

Each Module has a set of smaller games that test a number of skills. The theme for this year was that of CITY CONQUEST and the respective teams were given certain objectives to be achieved over two days. The game kicked off with an online elimination round after which the teams are short-listed and invited to play it on the campus. Teams from the best B-schools from all over India like IIMs, XLRI, FMS, MDI, XIMB, etc., were short-listed.

The game was won by a combined team from IIM Luckhnow and XIMB. The winners got a cash prize of Rs. 20,000. The team from IIM Calcutta and XIMB finished runners up and were awarded a cash prize of Rs. 10,000.

The game won acclaim not only from the aspiring managers from various top B-schools all over India but also from top corporate houses which include Satyam (who were the sponsors of Skill City at Xpressions 2004), Infosys, Frost & Sullivan, Cadence Design Systems, Coca-Cola India Ltd, Tata Refractories Limited, Bajaj Allianz etc. Infact a corporate version of the game was conducted in the last week of September 2004, which saw participation from several leading corporate houses.

Looking at the response Skill City has generated in the first two years of its existence, the game is set to grow into one of the most popular games on and off campus in the business world. As the tag line of the game truly proclaims, it is set to become the "The Toughest Test for your Softest Skills".
