Press Release - 16th November 2003 National IT Seminar 2003 at XLRI Jamshedpur Heavyweights companies in the ERP domain of the likes of SAP, Baan, PwC, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Microsoft Navision, Wipro, TCS, Patni Computer Systems, ICICI Infotech and Tata Technologies converged at XLRI Jamshedpur for the Fifth annual National IT Seminar 2003 the on 15th & 16th of November. NITS is the brainchild of SOCRATES (The Society for the Rapid Assimilation of Technology and Systems) - the student initiative to provide a thrust in academic area and a medium to bring technology closer to the students. It is also responsible for keeping the students abreast of emerging trends and technologies, whilst co-coordinating workshops, seminars, guest lectures, live projects etc. Sponsored by Patni Computer Systems, this year's seminar was organized in association with CII, Confederation of Indian Industry, Jharkhand Chapter and boasted of DataQuest as its Media Partner. The theme of the seminar was "ERP II- The Next Leap". The seminar covered all aspects of ERP II ranging from the Components of ERP II like Supply Chain Management (SCM), Product Life Cycle Management (PLM), Business-Intelligence to topics like Collaborative Commerce, ERP for Small & Medium Enterprises and also Implementation of ERP Systems. The seminar was inaugurated by Mr. Varun Jha, CIO Tata Steel and also Convener of IT Panel, CII Jharkhand Chapter. Drawing from his rich experiences, in his keynote address he stressed on the need for the fusion between the existing ERP systems and other stand-alone applications like SCM, CRM etc. He also spoke at length on the concerned environmental forces, approach to implementation and the strategic advantages gained due to the implementation of ERP. Concluding the speech he stressed on a more meaningful expansion for ERP, that is E- Extensibility R-Results P-people. This was followed by insightful presentations by top delegates of the companies that had assembled there. Mr. Karthik Iyengar, Prog Manager of Wipro (Collaborative Commerce and ERP) dilated on 'Harnessing ERP II for making an informed decision for creating and efficient collaborative commerce environment'. He stressed upon the fact that to manage extended enterprises and to garner gains from a market which is about $28-30 billion in size, Collaborative Commerce can be used as a tool to attain competitive advantage by leveraging appropriate linkages between a company's value chain and the value chains of their customers, suppliers and other partners. Through various examples, Mr. Karthik also explained how c-commerce could provide increasing business value and ROI and help in trimming down the costs involved, especially the hidden costs of administration, technical support and end user operations. Some of the recommendations, which were given by Mr. Iyengar to the buyers' side, were to look at vertical markets and synergies of scale. The baton was carried forward by Mr. Anjan Sen of Cognizant Technology Solutions who talked about Business Intelligence as a component of ERP II that is "the best way to link systems that do not talk to each other." Mr. Sen also cited examples of various companies like Cox Cable, Bank Financial Corporation, Samsung Electronics, Lillian Vernon, SW Airlines and others who are reaping gains from BI in areas like measurement of customer loyalty, prediction of customer behaviors through use of neural networks, identification of cost deals, mapping out worst case scenarios, need assessments of target customers and others. He also gave an overview of CTS providing chunks of service for ERP 1 and ERP 2 implementations and rollouts. Mr. Sen also talked about EIF (Enterprise Information Factory) as the emerging paradigm, which provides the technical architecture, to construct and deploy extendable, distributable and integrated scalable solutions needed to support businesses' critical applications.
