Due to the low operating efficiency of the Indian ports new capacity introduction is becoming inevitable. The globalisation had opened the doors for trades. To provide the level playing field and maintaining efficient services policy makers need to have a look for the augmentation of the capacity.
2. Capacity Utilization: Majority of Indian ports are operating on the near full capacity. It's not only turnaround time but also the pre- berthing time which is high vis-à-vis their counterparts. Owing to which a ship calling on Indian ports does not get immediate berthing. According to recent survey by Economic survey of India lowest pre berthing time among all the major ports is that of JNPT, which has also increased from 9.36 hours to 10.56 hours in 2004-05 over the last year. The increased pre berthing time leads to increased cost of calling upon the Indian ports. The recent implementation of $50/ twenty equivalent feet unit (TEU) surcharge by NSICT was a measure to ease out congestion. The question arises are these measures long term.
The possible answer to this lacuna would be that Indian ports increase their capacity.
