What needs to be done - A Business School Perspective

A two-pronged strategy appears to be necessary. On the one hand the corporate sector and the bureaucracy drive purposively towards consolidation of moral and spiritual values based upon purifying the mind and identifying consciously with the 'Higher Self' instead of the single minded pursuit of pleasure through the acquisition of wealth. On the other hand, the individual is educated to give primacy to human dignity and duty towards others instead of emphasizing on his own rights.

For this, the business schools of India need to be complemented by a systematic educational movement from the primary school level, reviving the inculcation of the age-old moral and ethical valued inherent in Indian wisdom side by side with training and modern scientific knowledge and skills. The climate in the wake of the economic scandals and the explosions rocking the business environment calls for a fresh beginning. The following needs to be done to impart the same: -

  1. Identify and establish the linkages between end-state values and core values.

  2. Educate existing and prospective managers on values.

  3. Suggest methods of sustaining values by various organizations.

What needs to be done - A Managerial Perspective

Adoption of a comprehensive corporate ethics program should begin at the top of the corporate structure and should be integrated with an organization's system of rewards and punishments. The accounting profession has promoted the idea of a (ethical) tone at the top of a corporation. Unfortunately, this emphasis is incomplete. Management must propagate awareness of ethics, at the top, middle, and bottom! By taking steps to monitor activities of those reporting to them, managers reduce their own exposure to legal actions and undesirable publicity.

Concluded.
