Melbourne Business School has appointed a new Dean and Director, UK-based Professor Zeger Degraeve, after a six-month global search.

Professor Degraeve comes to Melbourne from London Business School – one of the world’s top business schools - where he has served in senior leadership roles and was instrumental in establishing the school’s Dubai Centre.

The Chairman of the Melbourne Business School Board, Peter Barnes, said in addition to his award-winning research and teaching, Professor Degraeve impressed members of the selection panel with his commitment to innovation.

“As business schools around the world rethink management education, we are privileged to have Professor Degraeve’s academic leadership and international expertise,” Mr Barnes said.

“These will be indispensable as MBS builds on its status as a leader in management education in the Asia Pacific region, and works towards becoming one of the world’s top 20 MBA institutions.”

The Belgian-born professor of decision sciences, who has a passion for operations research and teaching, begins his initial four-year term in the last quarter of this year. He replaces Professor Jennifer George, who is expecting her first child.

“Jennifer has done an outstanding job during her two years at the helm of MBS, substantially strengthening our financial position and our academic reputation. The Board is indebted to her for her leadership and counsel through that time, and we look forward to welcoming her back to MBS in 2012 in a senior academic role,” Mr Barnes said.

From the UK, Professor Degraeve said he was delighted at the prospect of moving to Melbourne and leading Australia’s pre-eminent management education institution.

“MBS has a world-class faculty that is passionate about teaching and research, with deep links to the business community; an exceptional executive education business; and an internationally diverse, experienced student body. It’s a great honour to be joining an institution with a great heritage and an even more promising future,” Professor Degraeve said.

Professor Glyn Davis, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne - MBS’s parent institution – welcomed the appointment.

“MBS is renowned for its excellent teaching, rigorous research and business relevance, and I am confident Professor Degraeve will bring to this role the experience and global networks necessary to keep MBS at the forefront of business education in Australia and globally,” Vice-Chancellor Davis said.

Obviously, Mr. Degraeve knows nothing about the school and about Jenny George and her job at the school during the last years...
