Group Discussion Topic: Female Foeticide and Infanticide in India

 | July 25,2011 12:37 pm IST

Sex selective abortions and increase in the number of female infanticide cases have become a major social phenomenon in several parts of India. It transcends across all castes, class and communities.

The girl children are killed even before they are born. It has been observed by numerous scholars that the latest advances in medical science have even worsened the situation. The tests like Amniocentesis and Ultra-sonography were originally designed for detection of congenital abnormalities of the foetus, but are being misused for knowing the sex of the foetus with the intention of aborting it if it happens to be a female.

The situation gets worsened when these abortions are planned and carried out well beyond the safe period of 12 weeks—endangering the pregnant women’s life.

The group discussion is open to discuss and analyze the magnitude of female Foeticide and infanticide in India.

Socio-economic empowerment of women is essential for making informed decisions and for change of the mind sets. The Government of India has undertaken a number of initiatives for this, such as Support to Training and Employment Programme for Women (STEP), The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act(MGNREGA), National Rural Livelihood Mission(NRLM) and loans through the Rashtriya Mahila Kosh. This should go a long way in empowering women and enable them to take decisions about the birth of children, their spacing, retain girl children and improve the nutritional and educational status.

Shame on the people who kill their own child...god shouldn't give these people the right to become parents
Becoming a mother or a father is a blessing and this kind of people are not supposed to be blessed

Reena you are right, These kind of people should not become parents ever.
How could any one kill her/his own child whether it is a baby boy or girl.

Government should also take more strict action towards this, and should punish those doctors and nurses who help to abort baby girl
