Group Discussion Topic: The Cabinet Reshuffle of Disappointment

Yesterday’s cabinet reshuffle left many disappointed. As per assumptions, it was an image makeover exercise by UPA government, but failed to achieve what it was meant for.
According to DNA- a national daily, this was a certain presumption which was quite off the mark because that was not what Congress president Sonia Gandhi and PM Manmohan Singh had in mind.
PM and Congress president did not see the reshuffle exercise as one of the ways of countering the dented image of the government as a result of the scams of last six months — the 2G spectrum allocation issue and the Commonwealth Games among others.
Congress’ Murli Deora announced his resignation — for whatever reasons - he has made way for his son Milind Deora’s entry into the government.
Veerappa Moily, the former minister for law and justice has been now been given the corporate affairs portfolio. He is quiet disappointed with the reshuffle. Salman Khurshid will take over the law and justice folio.
Mukul Roy is another demoted minister. While he continues to hold the shipping portfolio, railways is been taken away from him. Last week, Roy failed to visit the Assam train crash site despite the PM's directive. When asked reasons why he did not visit the site, he claimed that the PM and not him was the railway minister.
The former chief minister of Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmukh has been asked to move to the science and technology and earth sciences leaving his earlier portfolio of rural development. This is for the second time that Deshmukh has been shuffled within the cabinet this year.
The statistics and programme implementation minister and former sports minister MS Gill has been dropped from the cabinet. PM forwarded Gill's resignation from the cabinet to the president with a recommendation that it be accepted.

there is no change of portfolio in the top leadership...thus it is quiet true and evident that the reshuffle was done just to bring in some people close to Gandhi family like Jayanthi Natarajan, Milind Deora and Jitendra Singh, close associate of Rahul Gandhi
