Q. Can you tell us something about yourself and your pre-MBA qualifications and work-experience?
I did my schooling from St. Aloysius Day School and La Martiniere for Boys, Kolkata. I pursued my Bachelors in Commerce from St. Xavier’s college (Kolkata) where I majored in Marketing Management. Thereafter, I worked in my family concern for a period of one year. The company is in the business of manufacturing Gray Iron Castings.

I applied to the IIM’s, XLRI, MDI, FMS and IIFT.
Q. Your present B-school and programme. Also specify your Batch.
I am currently pursuing PGDM from IIM Kozhikode. (Batch of 2012)
Q. So when did you decide to go for MBA and what was the driving force behind to take this decision?
Coming from a morning college, I used to work part time in my family concern. It was at work that I realized the importance of a professional degree in management. I decided to go for MBA right after college but as I couldn’t make it to an institute of my choice, I gave CAT another shot and was fortunate to have made it to IIMK.
Q. How many years of experience do you have?
I had about 12 months of “post-graduation” experience before joining IIMK
Q. Tell us about the company you were employed in, your work profile, area of work etc
I worked for our group companies, Shree Jagannath Iron Foundry (P) Ltd & Khaitan Iron Foundry (P) Ltd.
Being a family concern, I was fortunate to have been allowed to dabble in various verticals. I began with operations but slowly graduated to marketing and HR. Prior to joining IIMK, I was handling Exports & Business Development for the company.
Q. Do you feel that your work experience has helped you in getting through the college of your choice?
I realized the importance of pursuing an MBA while at work. I don’t think my work helped me to get through an IIM but it is certainly helping me now as I can relate to various issues and topics being taught to us.
Q. Has your Work experience been helpful for you to understand the curriculum in a better way?
Certainly. Having had a cross-functional exposure, I can relate to many things being taught as part of the pedagogue here. My work experience has also helped me to identify what I exactly need to “take out of this place”.
Q. Will an MBA degree add on to your existing career plan or did you decide to switch/start a career in management?
I wish to get back to my family business after completing my MBA as I have some ideas which need to test waters. An MBA would definitely make me better at decision making, interpersonal skills and ability to look at business issues with from diverse perspectives. In that sense, MBA degree to me is an add on to my existing career plan.
Q. If you have opted for this course for a change in your career track, what made you feel so of changing your career track?
As explained above, rather than change, this course to me is a means to intensify and expedite what I was already doing. Further, I wish to implement some business ideas and an MBA will surely come in handy in more ways than one.
