Pay Attention: If the interrogative word itself is the subject, the aux verb 'did' is not used. In the negative, 'did' is used.

Study the sentences - 3, 7 & 9.

Past Indefinite Tense in Passive Voice and the use of the second form of the verb 'be' (was, were) with complements - Passive Voice.

1. In the past, many battles were fought and the result was that many people were killed.
2. Gandhiji was sent to jail many times but he always did what he wanted for the good of the people.
3. I was born on 25th July 1847 in Faizabad.
4. A murder was committed in the village yesterday.
5. The soldiers fought bravely but were defeated.
6. During the Mughal period many temples were demolished.
7. Macbeth was overpowered by over-ambition and it was decided by him to succeed Duncon.

With Complements

1. There was a time when people lived in caves and trees.
2. It was spring and plants were in bloom.
3. Why were most of the members absent from the meeting?
4. Premchand was a great novelist and storywriter.
5. There was nothing but commotion in the coach when the train caught fire.
6. Was Nehruji not the first Prime Minister of India?

Past Continuous Tense

Past Continuous Tense denotes continuous actions without a break in the past. The aux verb 'was' or 'were' with ing-form in Active Voice and with 'being' + 3rd form of the verb in Passive Voice is used.
