Placement 2003

 Placement Report 2003: IIM Calcutta

IIM Calcutta has had a remarkable Placement year. With a graduating batch size of 251, the largest across all premier management institutes and business schools, IIM Calcutta came out in flying colours, attracting the best firms and best jobs coming to campus.

The success of Placements 2003 reflects the traditionally strong recruiter perception of IIM Calcutta. Strong recruiter perception is the result of industry interaction that is not limited to recruitment but across a wide range of areas. A good example of this is the collaboration with industry in courses being offered on campus. Among the most sought after optional courses in marketing, for example are the two conducted with interaction with leading corporate houses - Marketing in Practice and Strategic Brand Management.

It is this synergistic interaction with leading corporates that also explains one of the more noteworthy aspects of Placements 2003 - i.e., the phenomenally successful lateral placement programme. The lateral placement programme, meant for students with significant work experience, was begun in 2000 to allow both firms and students more flexibility in recruitment. The programme itself has evolved in the last couple of years and now is an important and integral part of the placement process. This year 54 offers were made in the lateral placement programme. The strong lateral process is also an additional reason for IIM Calcutta's standing among recruiters.

Given the fact of large graduating batches, IIM Calcutta has always emphasised the building of enduring corporate relationships. In this we have been assisted substantially by our alumni. Being the first IIM to be set up in the country, we now have alumni spread all over the world. It is this large and very well networked alumni resource that we have consistently leveraged in interacting with firms both at home and abroad.

IIM Calcutta encourages and nurtures independent thinking and the space within which to 'be different', to explore new avenues. As a result our students tend to be more entrepreneurial and risk-taking. Like always, this year there were students who decided not to go down the well-trodden path to corporate success. For example, Vinayak Lohani, opted out because he decided to dedicate himself to social work and wants to start his own NGO. Similarly, Deekshant Sehrawat, decided to pursue a career in music.
