Placement 2007

Key Highlights of Overall Placements

This year, Indian B-schools have been quite tight-lipped regarding divulging placement data to the media, though this was observed only in top-notch B-schools, while some other B-schools showed enough transparency and were quite open with their data and figures.
This might be testimony to the fact that nothing really spectacular happened at placements this year. The placement scenario was just as expected - the due rise in salaries, the usual companies making a beeline to campuses to recruit students with a few new national / international corporate names thrown in, some senior leadership roles offered, and a smattering of associate profiles in international I-Banks and consulting firms. Perhaps the only trend of note - though it could hardly be called a trend - was the influx of firms from the middle-east. The increase in offers from Singapore, Hong Kong and other South East Asian and East Asian markets is proof of the trust placed in talent from Indian B-schools to lead the growth in these sunrise industries and high growth markets, but its hardly a testament to anything remarkable as far as the placement scene at Indian B-schools goes.

Growing preference for Indian locations and entrepreneurship pursuits continue to be highlights of placements at Indian B-schools this year as well. The trend of opting for Indian locations started only a couple of years ago, with the boom in Indian economy and the ever-increasing opportunities available to students on home-soil, and continued to draw students in this year's placements as well. A large number of students sought to take part in India's emergence as a global superpower, choosing coveted domestic profiles to financially more lucrative international offers, or starting business ventures of their own.

The abundance of employers in the market and availability of choicest of profiles along with new emerging profiles, led to this trend of Indian students giving up overseas placements and dollar salaries to stay on home ground. Many students claim to have been inspired by the quality of work, range of opportunities and challenges available, and the variety that it offered to stay back in India, and at the same time, be a part of great Indian growth story. Profiles and roles offered have beaten salaries to be the differentiator students are looking for.

A few B-schools provided a recruitment option to their students, which allowed them to apply in their "dream company", that too in their preferred profiles. Before the process started, every student got to choose his dream company. This year, a strong percentage of students converted that option - thereby getting an offer from the company they aspired and dreamt of.
