New Product Development: Feature Driven Innovation
for Growth and Profit

Objectives:

  • To provide participants with proven, best-practice tools and concepts for creating winning new products and services;

  • To impart expertise in the use of the instructors’ own approach to innovation, "F.D.I." (Feature-driven innovation), and practice applying it to participants’ new product ideas;

  • To guide participants in the construction of winning business designs (including marketing, strategy, production, distribution, sales, service) around new product ideas;

  • To work with participants in developing profit-based innovative ideas in real-time, in an action learning team-based environment

For: Senior managers, managers, design engineers, and any one else involved in new product design, as well as entrepreneurs, who are interested in a results-based workshop to understand all key aspects of innovation and new product development. There is no restriction to class size. There will be considerable group work.

Contents: This is a fully residential programme on the subject, comprising of about 40 classroom hours in one week, Monday through Saturday. The intense one-week experience seeks to immerse participants in the experience of focused applied business-driven creativity, as it is practiced by the world’s top innovative organisations and entrepreneurs.

The contents of the program will include: -

Introduction to new product development; benchmarking best practices in innovation; discipline, then chaos - organising performance-based innovation from day one; "where is the money, where will it be in five years?" - profit-pool analysis for profit-driven innovation; reconciling ‘inspiration’ and ‘perspiration’ - five approaches; innovating product features: FDI (feature driven innovation) as a language and logic of profit-driven creativity; Improving existing products: optimal incremental innovation; cost-benefit analysis of incremental innovation; optimal radical innovation; innovation investment as doors to the future: a real options approach; interpreting the sources of market value; innovation ‘sweet spots’ - systematic invention through creativity templates; unpacking the business model - creativity in business design; platform leadership - innovative product architecture; mass customization vs. mass production; innovating in the experience economy; intrapreneurship: innovating in large organisations.
