Objectives:

• To familiarize the participants with the basic theory and practice of IP regimes in India as well as globally

• To look into specific cases of competitive advantage gained through protection of IP in formal as well as informal sector

• To get hands-on experience in reading patents, reviewing prior art, and understanding the strategic issues involved in protection of IP

• To appreciate the dimensions of licensing associated with IP protection

For: This programme aims at orienting senior leaders, planners, and managers of private and public sector firms and programmes in agribusiness, biotechnological, and drug sector. Special focus is on knowledge intensive approaches to developing competitive goods and services in a globalizing economy. The ethical aspects of knowledge extraction and utilization will also be discussed. Various individuals and groups in formal and informal sector producing commercializable intellectual property (IP) may thus recognize how protection of IP can help them harness strategic gains in a highly competitive economy. The emerging legal and statutory changes in IP laws will be reviewed so that firms and research institutions can prepare themselves for post TRIPS scenario.

Content: Apart from usual lectures and group discussions, course will provide the opportunity to participants to interact with senior leaders from industry, policy making, and research and development institutions. There will also be group work to develop strategies about IP protection within the organizations as well as for acquiring the IP from outside. Facilities for online search will be provided to familiarize the participants with proprietary as well a public domain IP services.
