Taking Family Business to the Next Level: The Six Dimensions

Overview: This workshop will focus on providing family members with the framework and skills to address difficult problems. It will take participants to the next level of diagnosing and solving seemingly intractable issues that constrain long-run family enterprising. It will teach them to think strategically about the process side of their family and business interactions and to implement organizational solutions that take into account the long-run systemic outcomes.

The perspective of the workshop is on family enterprising - a commitment to embracing the mindset and methods for transgenerational entrepreneurship and wealth creation. Participants in the workshop will identify the challenges and barriers to transgenerational entrepreneurship and wealth creation in their family group. They will conduct root cause analysis of the presenting issues in order to determine the deeper systemic roots, tensions, and complexities associate with their goals and outcomes.

Participants will learn and practice the skills necessary to be a systems leader within the context of their own family and business. The workshop will also address the process and leadership dynamics associated Babson’s Six Dimensions of an Enterprising Family- an enterprising vision, participatory leadership, effective family and team relationships, "familiness" strategies, entrepreneurial decision making, structures and transgenerational performance outcomes.

For: The workshop is designed for all family members who are owners and or managers in their family group. The goal of the workshop is to have family members think and act as an enterprising team with a commitment to transgenerational wealth creation. The "family team" experience is much more rich when there are multiple family member stakeholders attending the workshop.

Session Descriptions: The key areas to be covered include the analytical, behavioral and creative aspects of strategy formulation and implementation at the business unit level. The case method will be used extensively to cover the broad areas below: -

  • Introduction: Understanding the Family Business System Using a Growth Scenario

  • Introduction: Understanding the Family Enterprising and Transgenerational Wealth Creation

  • A Process Framework for Systems Leadership: Identifying the systemic tensions that create challenges and barriers in family groups

  • The Communication Skills for Systems Leadership: Building relationship capital in family group

  • The Power and Empowerment Issues for Systems Leadership: Developing the personal awareness that "unhooks" you from systems issues

  • The Difficult Issues that Control Your Family Group: Surfacing the "unmentionables" that drive you crazy or scare you to death

  • The Competitive Constraints that Hinder Your Family Group: Assessing the resources and capabilities that you need to compete over the long-run

  • A Process Perspective on Family System Governance: Utilizing effective strategies and structures to rid your system of ambiguity and create long-run health

  • A Family Enterprising Vision: Clarifying the Risk and Return Expectations of Shareholders

  • The Continuing Agenda: Establishing an action plan for continuing the work we started at the workshop
