Driving the Merchandise Planning Process to Exceed Financial Goals
Programme Director: Prof. Vincent G. Quan
November 24-27, 2004
at ISB Campus, Hyderabad
Introduction: The removal of quotas on January 1, 2005 will present a tremendous opportunity to countries in Asia including India and its neighbours. The textile industry, in particular, will benefit greatly from this move. In addition, the removal of quotas will have a ripple effect on manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers.
In today's global environment, successful fashion marketers (wholesale level companies who source for production) and vertical retailers are utilising a combination of market intelligence and a clearly defined merchandise planning process to ensure financial success. The merchandise planning team coordinates the efforts of key functional areas to meet or exceed financial targets set by the organisation's executive management group. In order to execute senior management's merchandising strategies the organisation must rely on a clearly defined planning process, along with quantifiable deliverables and objectives. The Merchandise Planning Calendar lies at the heart of this process.
There are three primary objectives of this programme. First, the various relationships within a vertical marketing system will be explored. Managers will then gain a broader knowledge of the core competencies and expectations for each market. Second, the wholesale apparel organisation will be discussed in detail. The various roles and interdependencies between key functional areas within this organisation will be covered, providing a solid foundation upon which to build one's knowledge base. Finally, the critical components of the merchandise planning process will be reviewed at length, providing managers with the necessary tools to achieve financial success.
In summary, this programme will allow managers to make better business decisions on issues pertaining to the development, production, and sale of fashion apparel. Understanding the many components of the merchandise planning process is a critical link in the relationship between manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers. In the end, the goal is to satisfy the ultimate consumer at the point of sale while avoiding the many pitfalls which plague the industry such as high markdowns, slow turns, and excess inventory.
