IIM Ahmedabad - Amaethon 2005
IIMA ABC's Maiden B-school Meet
January 29-30, 2005

(Amaethon, n: the farmer god; ancient god of agriculture)

Till recent times, agriculture sector, in spite of being a private sector, was primarily funded by government. But recently, many corporate and private banks are investing in the sector to tap the vast potential of the rural market. The urban consumer market is saturated and highly competitive, whereas the rural market is vastly untapped. The logic is clear; investing in agriculture - the main source of livelihood for majority of the rural Indians - will result in increased surplus, which they can spend in buying the consumer products. Hence, agribusiness has gained prominence more than ever in recent times.

Amaethon 2005 is an effort in this direction to celebrate the ever-increasing importance of agriculture per se and agribusiness in particular; to highlight the importance of the sector on which more than sixty percent of the population depends for livelihood. We believe the national objective of social welfare can be achieved through improvement in agriculture, inter alia, and the event is an effort in this direction to attract attention and make aware the significance of this sector.
