IBM Carpe-Diem 2005
Annual Cultural Festival at IIM Calcutta
16th January 2005

‘IBM Carpe-Diem 2005’ ended with a flourish on the night of 16th Jan after three days of absolute fun and frolic at IIM Calcutta’s inter college cultural festival. The festival saw participation from a number of colleges with particularly large contingents from IIT Kharagpur and St. Xaviers. It also featured a number of celebrated proponents of art. It started with ‘Inherit the Wind’, an IIMC’s Dramatics Cell’s production. The next day had a number of events like Skits, street plays and the star performances being that of ‘Beat Busters’ and the finals of 'Armageddon'. The last day had the finals of Choreo competition and one of the most awaited events ‘Dance Like a Man’ - a play in two acts by Lillete Dubey and also the professional band performances by ‘Orient Express’ and ‘Indian Ocean’.

The participation levels showed how eager everybody was to be at IIM Calcutta. The qualities of performances were equally rewarding and commensurate to the enthusiasm of the audiences. Three plays were staged and each of them ran packed houses. Lillete Dubey was at her best, and this being the 223rd presentation, it couldn’t have been delivered any better. The involvement of the audience with her play was intense and the following of every nuance detailed. Apart from the director/actor herself, Shivani Wazir and Joy Sengupta endeared themselves to the audience and received standing ovation for their outstanding performance.

The two other plays were IIMC’s own Inherit the Wind and the guest-college play by St. Xavier - 'Waiting for Godot'. The former was a very powerful and mature effort and reflected proper understanding of the delicate topic of an individual’s freedom of making a choice and deriving one’s individuality through it. It also showed that the budding managers of IIM Calcutta are capable of empathizing with such deep human emotions. Xavier’s on the other hand handled an arcane topic and tried to bring out the depth of different human characteristics and traits.

Dance is an elemental part of any college festival and Carpe-Diem was no exception. The high point was Beat Buster’s who enthralled one and all with there medley of choreographed sequences based on famous Bollywood movies. Apart from that, a number of inter college events were also held with 'Danz-e-Rodeo', the Inter-College dance completion being the highlight. Danz-e-Rodeo was won by St. Xavier’s with IIMC being the runner’s up. Solo dance competitions and couple dances were also organized during the day.
