XLRI's Fifth National Industrial Relations Conference discusses
"Industrial Relations in the New Economy"

The Fifth National Industrial Relations Conference - NIRC 2005 - discussed the theme of "Industrial Relations in The New Economy" at XLRI Jamshedpur.

Organised by the Society, Forum for Industrial Relations at XLRI, the event had representation from both the Management and the Unions: Messrs Vivek Patwardhan, Vice President (HR), Asian Paints; Ashok Mukherjee, Senior GM, TCS; Sankaran Raghunathan, Chairman, Blueshift; Mr. Harbhajan Singh, Vice President, Tata Worker's Union; Pabitra Chatterjee, General Secretary, American Express Employees Union were among the speakers at the Conference. The theme was chosen to take stock of the changing face of Industrial Relations in the new Environment of globalisation.

Inaugurating the Conference, Mr. Niroop Mohanty, Vice President, Tata Steel said that most of the challenges of the new economy could be effectively met by getting to know one's people. "The new economy is all about people. The narrow concepts about how to, and who is to, manage people has to be altered. HR is not to be confined to the higher levels of the organisation, but has to be taken to the factory level."

Father Casmir Raj, Director, XLRI, who presided over the meeting stressed on the importance of NIRC. "NIRC acts as a knowledge transfer platform. The students and faculty get first hand knowledge of the trends in Industrial Relations while the delegates can brainstorm with other experts in this field and derive solutions for their problems."

Mr. Vivek Patwardhan, Vice President (HR), Asian Paints, spoke on the IR Issues for the New Manager. "The biggest challenge of the times is to rekindle the work ethic. This is possible only through a holistic approach by the judiciary and government to address the larger issues. The courts have been adopting industry friendly practices for the past few years. The real enemy of workers is not the management, but the international competition."
