"Industrial Relations in the New Economy"

Previous

Mr. Ashok Mukherjee, Senior GM, TCS, espoused the cause of 'Managing People Relations by Leveraging Technology': "People are everyone's responsibility. By moving the routine time consuming tasks online, HR will have more time to focus on nurturing its employees. This also helps to bring the employees closer to the management."

Mr. R. N. Misra, Head, Legal HR&IR, Tata Steel, spoke about the caveats in the legal system of India regarding outsourcing. "Outsourcing in India is moving towards strategic outsourcing. More and more companies are focusing on their core competencies and outsourcing the peripheral activities. But the legal system has a long way to go in this respect."

Dr. C. V. Venkata Ratnam, Director, IMI Delhi, stressed upon the Impact of WTO on Labour. "Trade Unions find it a problem as the political parties adopt the same economic policies regardless of their ideology. The WTO has forced the government to change the social welfare laws to laws favouring developed countries."

The convention had a round table discussion on Unionisation in the New Economy. Dr. E. M. Rao, Renowned Professor and Author, Industrial Relations Area, XLRI kicked off the discussion with the jobs that new economy has provided and the societal changes that happen along with it. Mr. Harbhajan Singh, Vice President, Tata Worker's Union, talked about the challenges faced by today's trade unions.
