Tim Timken Addresses Students at XLRI, Jamshedpur

Mr. Timken remarked that it was imperative for India to open its markets in all sectors, including manufacturing, if it wants to be the economic super power that it is capable of becoming. He emphasised the importance of manufacturing sector in the growth of USA's economy and said that India must not ignore its manufacturing sector in front of its services sector, where most of the attention is now focussed.

Mr. Timken urged the students to consider careers in manufacturing industry saying that manufacturing was a highly rewarding and challenging field vis-à-vis other's such as FMCG, Banking etc.

Mr. Timken's speech was marked with humour and witty replies to the questions posed to him. Replying to a students query on whether family run business are as good as professionally run businesses, he quipped how he had often been advised to "Get good people so that he can spend more time playing golf!" He said it was important for the businesses to be run by the best people for the roles, and if a family member proved his mettle, then it was alright for him to assume suitable responsibilities.

The function concluded with a vote of thanks from V. Suresh, general secretary, student affairs council.
