XLRI Confers Azim Premji with Industrial Peace Award

Jamshedpur, April 3, 2005: XLRI awarded the Sir Jehangir Ghandy Medal for Industrial Peace to Mr. Azim Premji, Chairman, Wipro. Mr. Premji is the medal's 38th recipient. This medal is given every year to people or organizations that have made significant contributions to this field. The Medal was presented by Mr. B. Muthuraman, Chairman of the Board of Governors, XLRI and Managing Director, Tata Steel, in the presence of the Chief Guest and Convocation Speaker, Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, Senior Advisor to the Director General of UNIDO.

Speaking on the occasion, Fr. A. C. Jesurajan, Secretary, XLRI, said that peace has assumed different connotations today and it is important to recognize peace initiatives in all these forms. Fr. A. C. Jesurajan said that Wipro has grown from strength to strength financially and has kept its human and social face alive. Fr. A. C. Jesurajan said that Mr. Azim Premji presented a picture of personal integrity and probity with initiatives like Azim Premji Foundation for education of children in Karnataka.

The Medal, instituted in honour of the Late Sir Jehangir Ghandy, former Chairman of the Board of Governors, XLRI, is presented by the Institute for outstanding contributions for Industrial and Social Peace in the Country. Previous recipients of the Medal include illustrious names from diverse fields such as JRD Tata, Arvind Mafatlal, Holck-Larsen, Rajmohan Gandhi, V. R. Krishna Iyer, S. Moolgaonkar, P. N. Bhagwati, V. Kurien, Keshub Mahindra, P. A. Sangma, Jyoti Basu, N. A. Palkhivala, J. N. Godrej, Brijmohan Lall Munjal and M. S. Banga.

Accepting the award, Mr. Premji said that the award is a reflection of the hard work, initiative, and innovative spirit of the team members of Wipro all across the world. Referring to the city of Jamshedpur, he said that the city was the most visible demonstration of Good Business in India. He said that such good business is an inspiration to all and an indication to all that the business organizations have meaning and purpose beyond making money and that contribution can be made in the development and growth of the country, very directly. Addressing the graduating students of XLRI, he said that the young leaders should continue to remain inspired by the city of Jamshedpur and should use the "anything is possible" spirit to build good businesses.
