49th Annual Convocation Held at XLRI Jamshedpur

Fr. N. Casimir Raj also spoke about the achievements of the XLRI students in various national and international competitions. Special mention was made about XLRI students, Ms. Sonia Chawla winning the Young Thought Leadership Award, Ms. Surabhi Loshali representing India in International Youth Leadership Conference in Prague and Mr. Kumar Anand's paper on 'Managing Intellectual Capital in Growth Organizations in the New Knowledge Economy' as being adjudged the most thought provoking paper in the 26th McMaster World Congress, Hamilton, Canada.

Addressing the graduating batch of 2005, Dr. Kandeh Yumkella said that it is important for them to see themselves as part of the global village to which they (and the companies or institutions that they will be working for) owe some degree of social responsibility. Dr. Yumkella also suggested six tools to help them navigate through the next phase of their careers in the global village. These tools were Sense of Purpose in life, Sense of Excellence, Sense of Proportion, Sense of Ethics and Responsibility, Sense of Adaptability and Agility and A Sense of Enthusiasm.

Dr. Yumkella spoke about the emerging global challenges, Corporate Social Responsibility and the "Silent Tsunami". Elaborating on it, he said that when deepening poverty, growing hunger, with the prevalence of deadly disease, the result is Silent Tsunami. Dr. Yumkella said that in the current global environment all these issues have to be looked into, to develop a successful organization with social responsibilities, quoting examples of the TATAs and the recipient of the Sir Jehangir Ghandy Medal for Industrial Peace, Mr. Azim Premji.
