Jaipuria Institute Hosts Seminar on 'Commitment Based Management' by Chris Majer

The Jaipuria Institute of Management hosted a potentially ground breaking seminar on what is slated to be the latest development in the practice of business leadership and management. Chris Majer, CEO of the U.S.-based Human Potential Project spent the afternoon
as the guest of Dr. J.D. Singh, Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, and an invited group of business leaders introducing the philosophy and practice of Commitment Based Management.

Mr. Majer has been a leading innovator of highly effective processes for producing transformational change in corporate cultures for firms that include Intel, Microsoft, EDS, Nike, Capital One, Citi Group, Amgen, and Allianz. Over the course of his career, he made three critical observations that lead to the creation of Commitment Based Management.

The first claim is that the very nature of work has changed. Most contemporary companies are now lead and managed by what are called knowledge or tacit workers. These are people who are well-educated, mobile, have the drive and skill to take on complex projects, and bring innovation and competitive advantage to a company.

His second claim is that the practice of management has not kept pace with the changes in the workplace. In fact Mr. Majer says, "Most of what we call contemporary management are practices that are relics of the WWII era. The practices haven’t change, what we have done is add technology to them so we can do a lot of things that are ineffective, inefficient, quash innovation and ambition, but we can do them quickly. Then we are mystified when we have high turn over, low morale, little innovation, and poor quality and customer service."

His third claim is that companies around the world are continuing to limit their competitive positioning by being wedded to a deeply dysfunctional view of how people learn. "If you ask most corporate leaders they will tell you that learning is the process of acquiring new theories, models, beliefs, ideas, tips, techniques, and information, all for the sake of gaining understanding, as we believe that to understand is to know."

"We got our start working with athletes and soldiers, people who are under constant pressure to perform and we learned early on that what they understood was of little import, what mattered was what they could do. Thus, in our world learning must be seen as the development of new competence, a new capacity for action. In this world, understanding is the booby prize."
