Jaipuria Institute Hosts Seminar on 'Commitment Based Management' by Chris Majer

Previous

Out of this view of the world, Majer and his team developed the process of commitment-based management. The basic tenet of which is that work is really a network of commitments that are made and fulfilled - or not - between people seeking to attend
to the needs of customers. Thus, the practice of management needs to shift to building competence at making, fulfilling, managing and tracking commitments as opposed to activity which is what current practices focus on.

When asked why he is brining this work to India, Mr. Majer had the following to say. "Commitment Based Management is not just some simplistic technique. It requires a foundation of values, the development of a new attitude, and the utilization of new management tools. My experience is that India has opened not only its economy but also its mind and given the extraordinarily high level of education, sophistication, and inherent focus on impeccability that is the norm here, Commitment Based Management is not only a natural fit, it has arrived at the perfect moment in time. I believe that what we have to offer can enable Indian companies to take the next leap in their development as it provides at last a predictable, proven, guaranteed way to unleash the potential of your greatest asset, your people."

Guaranteed we asked? "Yes, this is where we take a big leap beyond your typical high priced consultants. Every one of our projects comes with a 10X guarantee. Our client will get back a minimum of 10 times what they invest in us inside the time frame of our engagement, not at some distant point in the future, or we keep working with them at no extra charge until we do. We have been making that promise for about 10 years and have never had to spend an extra day on an engagement."

Asked for an example, Mr. Majer pointed to Columbia House, a U.S. Music distributor. "The way we work is that we take teams of managers and leaders and break them into small working units of 5 or 6. Each of these small teams is given a project that is chosen by the company’s leader as the vehicle by which we are going to teach the new practices. One of the projects at Columbia House was starting a new business unit. We asked the CEO if they had done this in the past. He said they had and that it took them 18 months the last time they did it. Thus, 18 months was our agreed upon benchmark. Using our methodology, they went from concept to launch in 7 months, saving 11 months of burn rate on the project and realizing 11 months of unanticipated revenue. This one project paid for the cost of our entire engagement and there were 10 projects in the engagement."

In closing, Mr. Majer offered that he believes Commitment Based Management can be to this generation of corporate leaders and managers what the quality process and movement was to the last generation. The Jaipuria Institute of Management has entered into a preliminary alliance with the Human Potential Project to bring their work on Commitment Based Management to Indian companies.

Concluded.
