SPJIMR-Mumbai Begins its Cinematic Journey with 'Shadow'

Previous

All set to join P&G India this year, the maverick director and founder of SPACE, Rahul Rajan, was all smiles when he said, "Making a movie had been on my mind for quite some time now. While there is no denying the majesty of theatre, there is a thrill to movieS
that is unmatched by any other medium. It is the one place where your imagination can truly run wild, and you can make the impossible happen."

On April 10, 2008 at 8:30 pm, students from SPJIMR came together with rising excitement and jubilation to watch 'Shadows', the fruits of the labor of the triumphant team of SPACE with their path-breaking venture into the world of cinema. The movie 'Shadows' is based on the comic book "Eat the Dead" by Siddharth Kotian, that was published under the Virgin Comics Imprint. The well-presented and thought-provoking film was centered on the lives of the five principal characters: Sonya (Meghana Kedar), Chris (Rahul Rajan), Raj (Abhishek Chauhan), Priya (Shubhra Jain) and Uday (Anshumaan Yadava). 'Shadows' dealt with elements that were decidedly supernatural with the Adrika (Kirti Ramnath) and Aghori (Nitin Sharma) challenging the events that were set in motion.

This thriller also explored the darkest nightmares that exist within the human psyche, compelling at times even the mildest of us to turn into monsters. The principal theme behind this flick was that "in the end, we all need to come to terms with our karma... Good or Bad". All in all, it was a wonderfully executed film production and quite impressive acting on each and everyone's part. The editing was good and the music pieces were well chosen to carry the gripping action and sinister nature of the plot. The light and sound systems worked perfectly in sync with the highs and lows in the scenes effectively leaving the audience at the edge of their seats, gasping with horror and excitement.

SPJIMR is among the top B-schools in the country, and considering the academic rigor and stress of management education, the very fact that B-school students have gone a step beyond regular academia under severe time constraints, and donned creative hats to conceptualize, visualize and recreate the magic of intense, thematic and social cinema is by itself the main highlight of SPACE. The uniqueness of the concept of 'SPACE' stems from the fact that it is a movie production, which is completely handled by the participants of the institute. Right from brainstorming to select the script, auditioning to select the cast, script reading sessions to direction, editing, lights, background score, the onus of it all is on the students.

The idea behind the formation of a path-breaking venture like SPACE is not just limited to a cinematic performance on screen but it is also a wonderful learning experience for students. It is all about learning management and administration principles by participating in the various cinematic processes. Team behavior and dynamics is best understood when practiced and making a film gives an enjoyable platform to understand and learn group dynamics. True managerial aptitude means the ability to implement, and through the various processes of cinema, be it with making timelines for the movie or handling administrative issues, students learn every aspect of implementation. Learning by doing is an integral part of the ADMAP Program, and the SPACE initiative just takes this learning one step higher!

Concluded.
