In 1944, the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The year 1964 was an important landmark in the history of the Institute, when it was recognized as a Deemed University by the Government of India (GOI). Today, TISS is a NAAC - 5 Star-rated COE (Center of Excellence). TISS's faculty members occupy positions of eminence in many GOI and UNO Committees.

Q. Over the years, TISS, Mumbai has established itself as an authority on education in HRM & LR. What is the roadmap for it in coming five years?

TISS is not competing with any other institute, either in India or abroad; it is committed to its vision and mission. However, TISS has been rated by the society and industry as one of the pioneering institutes in South Asia for its programmes in Social Sciences, Social Work, Human Resource Management, and Health & Hospital Management. In the next five years, TISS would place itself as an institute which facilitates the development of competent and committed professionals for practice, research and teaching. We wish to preserve and expand our reputation for the same.

Q. Apart from M.A. in HRM & LR, what are the other management-related programmes offered by TISS, Mumbai? Are there any other management-related courses being planned for launch in future?

The School of Management & Labour Studies of TISS is currently offering three masters programmes, i.e., Human Resource Management & Labour Relations, Globalization & Labour, and Social Entrepreneurship.
The Globalization & Labour Programme is a part of Global Labour University and similar other programmes are offered by its counterparts in Germany, Brazil and South Africa.
The Social Entrepreneurship Programme has its collaboration with Oxford University and James Madison University, New York.
The school would like to strengthen and consolidate its all three programmes in near future. At the institute level, TISS is currently offering 12 teaching programmes at master's level and 1 teaching programme in social work at under-graduate level.
