Introduction

Indian Institute Of Management, Ahemedabad was founded in 1961 and is the worlds renowned institution of management education and research. IIMA has been established by the government of India, in collaboration with the government of Gujarat and the Indian industry.

Academics lies at the core of IIMA. There are many avenues for the all round development of a student here at IIMA, but it is the emphasis laid on academics which is responsible for the institute's position as the top Asian business school.

IIMA offers four programmes for the development of management in the country - there are teaching programmes and one is a series of refresher courses for mid and top level management. Admissions to the postgraduate programme - PGP (equivalent to an MBA) are extremely competitive attracting many applicants every year. The faculty is organized into areas or groups or centers and keeps itself up-to-date with the outside world by engaging in research and consulting.

In its formative years, IIM-A collaborated with the Harvard Business school (HBS). Largely, as a consequence of this collaboration, IIM-A pioneered the case-study method of teaching in India.

The Educational programmes offered by the IIMA for the development of management are:

1. Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP-Gen)

The mission of the two-year Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) is to develop young men and women into competent professional managers for any sector of organized activity. PGP specifically focuses on:

• Equipping students with required conceptual and inter- personal skills and social purpose for managerial decision making and implementation.

• Encouraging entrepreneurial capabilities in students to make them effective change agents.

• Nurturing in students the capabilities of setting standards of excellence in managerial life.

PGP, internationally recognized as equivalent to an MBA, is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious of the Institute's teaching programmes. Four thousand students have graduated and they work at many levels in a wide variety of Indian public and private sector corporations and other organizations. Many have already attained top management positions in Indian industry or have become entrepreneurs. Most are serving in functional management positions.
