Introduction

Xavier Labour Relations Institute, Jamshedpur was founded in 1949 in Bihar. It was born of the vision of father Quinn Enright of the Society of Jesus. XLRI is a pioneering institute in management education with the objective of contributing to the professional management of industry, government, labour and NGO's. During the first seven years of growth, several courses for management and trade unions were developed and organized at the institute. A two-year day programme in Industrial Relations and Welfare commenced in 1953 and the title was changed to Personnel Management & Industrial Relations in 1985. The Evening Programme in management was started in 1966 and the two-year day programme in Business Management was started in 1968. To mark the 50 years of service to the executive world, XLRI has started a three year Executive Postgraduate programme last year to cater to the needs of executives.

The Institute has a spacious campus. It is located in the steel city of Jamshedpur in the newly formed state called Jharkhand. Campus facilities include an air-conditioned auditorium with 1500 seating arrangements, a spacious air-conditioned library, residential facilities for 250 students and an MDP Residence to accommodate 110 Executive participants who come for the Management Development Programmes.

Courses Offered

1. Post Graduate Programme in Personnel Management & Industrial Relations (PM & IR)

The courses directly related to PM&IR, the programme also includes a series of courses in basic subjects as well as other functional areas of management. Being a specialized one itself, the PM&IR programme does not provide for further formal specialization. Students choose an appropriate mix of optional courses according to their preference. Graduates of this programme are qualified for executive positions in Human Resource Development, Personnel Management, Industrial Relations, Labour Welfare and other related areas. During the last fifty years since XLRI was founded, more than 2400 students have qualified for the Post Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management & Industrial Relations and are occupying very senior level positions both in private and public sector organizations as well as in multinational companies in India and abroad.

2. Post Graduate Programme in Business Management (BM)

The specializations offered are Finance, Marketing, Information Systems, Operations Management and Strategic Management.

Eligibility
A minimum of three-year bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50 % aggregate marks, (40% for SC/ST candidates). However, those completing their final examination by June 2004 may also apply.
