HORIZONS 2004: IIM Kozhikode

HORIZONS 04, the Annual Management Seminar at IIMK started off at the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) campus on Saturday evening. The event was inaugurated by the Dr. Krishna Kumar, Director, IIMK.

Horizons has been a regular feature since year 2000. Into its fifth edition this year, Horizons has been a great success in the past with overwhelming participation from industry, B-schools, academia and the media. This years event was held at the IIM Kozhikode campus on the 27th and 28th of November. The event was sponsored by ONGC, KSIDC, Indian Oil and Indian Bank and supported by FICCI. Business Line was the media partner for the event.

This year's theme for HORIZONS was "Changing Times - Changing Paradigms". Director Dr. Krishna Kumar inaugurated the event on Saturday with his keynote address. He introduced the theme by talking about the exponentially increasing competition in Indian industry and how it is difficult to survive if one doesn't take to innovation. He also talked about his vision for IIMK. He saw IIMK as the biggest IIM in the country by the end of 4 years in terms of student intake. He said that the vision of IIMK is to become an integrated institute of management. He said the areas that IIMK is giving importance to were Knowledge generation, knowledge storage and knowledge dissemination. He also talked about the Faculty Exchange Program with foreign universities and faculty development program that is on the offing along with 7 other premier management institutes in the country. He also used this opportunity to announce to the world that IIMK has been awarded the certificate of 'Quality Improvement Center' by AICTE recently.

The next talk was delivered by Dr. D. K. Ghosh, Executive Director, Siemens Public Communication Networks Ltd. His talk dwelled on the topic "An ICT Perspective on Changing Times, Changing Paradigms". He stressed on the importance of innovation in a highly competitive world to remain a constant differentiator and leader. He stressed that those who follow the traditional pathway cannot generate wealth and would get acquired by the innovators very easily. He also talked in detail about the telecommunication industry, in particular about 3G and 4G and various issues and opportunities related to them.
