Annual Leadership Summit 2004
At ISB Hyderabad
Excerpts from Panel Discussions
December 10, 2004

ISB's Annual ISB Leadership Summit (ILS) was held at ISB, Hyderabad on 10th December 2004. The theme for this year's Summit was "World Class India", which was also the vision of Late Dr. Sumantra Ghoshal. The Summit has seen participation from eminent industry leaders across corporates.

The Keynote Speaker was Dr. Pramath Sinha, Principal, McKinsey & Company. Dr. Sinha spoke about the leadership qualities of Dr. Ghoshal, his tremendous passion and energy to raise people's aspirations and make them aim high in life. Dr. Ghoshal was also the founding dean of the ISB, so his comment on increasing the student strength at ISB was recalled fondly, "In the world of business schools, size does matter! Without scale, teaching and research excellence cannot be sustained."

'World Class in India'

Excerpts:

The first panel discussion was on the topic 'World Class in India'. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Pramath Sinha. The first speaker was Mr. R. C. Bhargava, ex-MD of Maruti Udyog Limited. He talked about the formation of Maruti, the joint venture with Suzuki, and the way Maruti reached world class status where it is today exporting cars to European countries. They started off with adopting Japanese best practices and adopting their quality processes to Indian conditions. Then they focused on how they handled human resources, and implemented an open work culture. All levels of employees were provided the same lunch room so that they could mix freely. The results are visible today in Maruti's success. He ended his talk with the observation that the industry has to play a big role in dealing with the government to get world class infrastructure in place.

The second speaker was Mr. R. P. Sharma, President, Gas Division, Reliance Industries Limited. He spoke about Reliance's success as a world class company, it's entry into the Fortune 500 ranks, and its journey so far. They have state of the art technology, but what is needed now is vast investment by the government in world class infrastructure - ports, roads, telecom, airports, power etc. His mantra for world class was a quote by Dhirubhai Ambani - Think Big, Think Fast, Think Ahead - Only when you dream you can do it. Our dreams have to be bigger, our ambitions higher, our commitments deeper and our efforts greater.
