The third panelist was Mr. Ramulu, Director Finance, HPCL. He defined a world class organization as one that embodies high degree of professionalism in operations, adds value for stakeholders and continuously produces world class leaders among other things. World class organizations typically groom and nurture six core strengths - corporate governance, people, technology, process, credibility and size. Critical mass in Indian economic development has been achieved despite hiccups, Indian IT industry is enviable today, India is among top five manufacturers of bulk drugs, and India is among six countries that launch satellites. The strength of India's success story lies in human capital. No wonder, focusing on their workers helped HPCL to be named the best managed company.

'Business as a Force of Good'

Excerpts:

This panel discussion had Ms. Rajshree Birla - Director on Board, Birla Group of Companies, Ms. Malini Mehra - Founder & Director, Centre for Social Markets and Dr. P. Ram Babu, Associate Director, Pricewaterhouse Coopers as speakers and was moderated by Mr. M. P. Joseph. The session focused on the role of business in addressing social ills, providing better opportunities for the weaker masses and in helping make the world a better place to live in.

Ms. Rajshree Birla stated that Corporate Social Responsibility was a key to establishing a link between the company and the environment they work in and was no longer a fringe responsibility. The social vision of the Birla group is to provide a better, sustainable way of life for the lower strata of society and to contribute to the human development index.

She stated that the goals of the Birla group are to ensure clean and safe drinking water availability to villages in India, strong agriculture sector and education to the masses. She emphasized that the company is prioritizing projects by engaging in a water project initiative, family planning services and partnering with institutes for better services. The biggest factor would be to motivate the individuals and gear them toward social service. Teams should not be materialistic and motivation should come from within.
