Annual Leadership Summit 2004 Ms. Malini Mehra spoke about the functioning of Center of Social Markets and business as a new creator of environment. She spoke of the some of the development challenges faced globally.
India:
Unemployment and Underemployment. Around 10 M new jobs needed annually, i.e., average growth of 10%.
Persistent gap between rural and urban human development.
Gender gap.
Quality of governance and infrastructure.
Global: Ms. Mehra said that Public Private Partnerships are the new remedy to fill in for government and market failure. She ended her talk by reminding the audience of their responsibilities. Dr. P. Ram Babu spoke of how business is an excellent institution to deploy the surplus created to generate more wealth. He emphasized on the participation of the stake holders as the businesses must be self sustaining. He cited ITC's e-chaupal as an example. He also stated that businesses must engage with the customer for business sustainability. Fair value balancing leads to value enhancement and this ultimately leads to competitive advantage. He stated that there must be a proactive response from the Indian industry and they must see an excellent opportunity in Corporate Social Responsibility. Businesses should look for gaps in human needs and contribute to Millennium development goals. 'Managing Across Borders' Excerpts: The third panel discussion of the day was about Managing Across Borders. This panel attempted to identify the key drivers for companies to become local and global leaders and how some companies have addressed these demands with innovative ideas and cross-border learning.
