IIM Calcutta Students Visit
Lahore University of Management Studies, Lahore

Previous

The panel discussion, ‘Pachaas Minute’, brought out the best from the students, with free expression of divergent as well as consensual views. One of the panelists, Kirti, a Fellowship Program student of IIM Calcutta, succinctly summarised the feelings shared by each member of the Indian delegation, thus: "I speak from my heart. I perceive very little difference in spite of crossing an international border. The people here speak the same language and share a similar culture. Bollywood is equally popular in Pakistan, and so are Indian soaps!" In fact, we were rather amused to learn that the Pakistanis formed their impression of Indian society on the basis of the ‘saas-bahu’ sagas, and were quite alarmed about what we thought of them when we told them that the only Pakistani channels available to Indian viewers were the state-controlled ones!

Responding to a question on Kashmir being the ‘core issue’ and the possibility of no talks till its resolution, the other Indian panelist, Priyanshu Singh, also the President of Students’ Council of IIM Calcutta, made the following comment to near unanimous acceptance by the House, "Suppose there are two cars coming from opposite directions on a single-lane road and they meet head-on so neither can move further without the other acquiescing. The drivers may then choose one of two options: either keep honking at each other, unable to hear the other’s point of view, simply waiting for the other to concede space; or step out of the cars to see if there is any possibility of settling the issue in any other manner, maybe constructing a two-lane road, if need be."

As the time neared to say good-bye, not only email ids but also promises to remain in constant touch were traded. We resolved to make future exchanges, at least between LUMS and IIM Calcutta, even more organised, and regular. Since the ice has now been broken, both the Institutes look forward to continue the practice for mutually beneficial interaction, in the years to come.

Concluded.
