Guest Lecture by Mr. Vijay Mahajan at IME, IIT Kanpur

IIT Kanpur has a long tradition of producing pioneers in business, sciences and technology. Mr. Vijay Mahajan is one such. He was on campus on the 21st of March to receive the distinguished alumni award for this year and deliver a lecture on globalization Mr. Mahajan, former dean of the Indian School of Business, holds the John P. Harbin Centennial Chair in Business at McCombs School of Business, University of Texas at Austin.
He has received numerous lifetime achievement awards, including the American Marketing Association (AMA) Charles Coolidge Parlin Award for visionary leadership in scientific marketing. The AMA also instituted the Vijay Mahajan Award in 2000 for career contributions to marketing strategy.

The world population stands at about 6 billion, of this only about 850 million people hail from the 'developed' nations - this is a mere 14%! Only a handful countries (Singapore, South Korea, Japan to name some) have transformed into developed nations post World War II.(To be a developed nation, the per capita GDP must be greater than 1000 USD).

Most global businesses focus on selling to the wealthiest fourteen percent of the world's population in the developed world. But these markets are over saturated, over competitive, aging and decreasing in size. Mr. Mahajan stressed on the opportunities open to the 86% of the world in unleashing new growth and profitability by serving everyone else.

Speaking of the United States of America, which is perhaps a paragon of development and prosperity, Mr. Mahajan said their strength lies in their immigration policy, 33% of the population in the US is migrant population, contributing significantly to its development.

About 40 bn dollars comes from Indians settled in the developed countries to India annually, this amount of money from outside is exceeded only by FDI.
