SPJIMR's Theatre Group Stages their Magnum Opus 'Kamala'

Previous

A well-presented and thought-provoking play directed by Anu Mishra and Jyoti Prakash, with Daisy D'Souza as production controller brought Vijay Tendulkar's 'Kamala' to life and in a span of two hours, the audience laughed and cried tracking the wave of emotions breathed by the terrific cast.
A haunting masterpiece with its universal appeal, Kamala is an indictment of male society in which women are mere stepping-stones in a man's quest for power and fame, and exposes a social malaise that continues to pervade contemporary India, despite all strides taken toward modernity.

The play explored the strange world of relationships. Relationships, which are at times inherited, relationships, which are at times bought in the market, relationships that sometimes change so much that you don't recognize them. Relationships between various characters, GASP 2006 portrayed yet another interpretation of Kamala. Drawing life from the effortless brilliance of the actors on stage, the words of the stalwart playwright reigned over the auditorium and rained emotions down, drowning out all other thoughts. 'GASP 2006' showed the awe-struck audience what legends are truly made of!

From Sameer Walzade's powerful portrayal of Jaisingh's macho bravado to Meghana Kedar's poignant rendition showcasing Sarita's hopeless resignation and quiet determination, which brought forth instant outrage and tears! While Thejaswi's endearing naiveté and heart-wrenching grief of Kamala tugged at heartstrings, Abhijeet Awasthi's donning the traditionalist Kakasaheb's tired wisdom gripped the audience as time flew by. The audience doubled with laughter as Kamlabai played by Kirti Ramnath with her unassuming audacity stole the show, and Yogesh playing Jain with his great comic timing had the audience in splits with his nosy antics.

The play ended to the standing ovation by a stunned audience and thunderous applause that refused to die down even as the GASP team, the cast and the amazing crew comprising Amshuman, Archish, Archana, Daisy, Divya, Jay, Pragya, Priya, Sandeep and Rajeshwari made their way towards the stage with beaming smiles and resounding cheers.

All in all it was a divine debut. A wonderfully executed production and quite impressive acting on each and everyone's part. The music pieces were well chosen too and carried the pathos and strain as suited the scene. The light and sound systems worked perfectly in sync with the highs and lows in the scenes effectively left the protagonists and the audience questioning their worth and their place in society.

Concluded.
