IIM Ahmedabad: In a League of its Own

A world-renowned faculty producing one-thirds of India’s management research; the well-evolved and rigorous case-based curriculum leading to a strong decision framework; an incomparable infrastructure; these are some of the defining features why IIM Ahmedabad retains its position among the continent’s best business schools.

The strong conceptual foundation of the program enables the students to excel in all aspects of management, be it operations, finance or marketing. Such all-round skills go a long way in grooming the students to become exceptional managers who can tackle multi-dimensional business problems. Hence, it comes as no surprise that the global recruiters find IIM-A students fitting for senior level positions on par with global business schools, where the average work-experience tends to be much higher. This is a clear testimony to the fact that IIM-A graduates are considered a superior resource in the organizations.

There has been a significant rise in the number of associate offers from leading investment banks. As of now, 9 students have been extended associate offers this year - the highest across all B-schools in the country and by some distance. With more than six months to go before actual placements, this number represents a record of sorts. It might be noted that the number of associate offers at IIM-A was 11 last year which was also an all-time high across campuses. Historically, IIM-A students have started high and have been quick to climb the corporate ladder. The number of illustrious IIM-A alumni in board rooms of global firms speaks volumes about their competence derived from the excellence of IIM-A. It is, thus, hardly surprising to note that leading international banks are willing to place large amounts of responsibility on IIM-A products in the form of associate-level positions.

What is also interesting to note is that an increasing number of students are opting out of the placement process in favour of entrepreneurship - another trend that is unique to IIM-A in India. The institute has welcomed the entrepreneurship drive by providing such students with the option of coming back to IIM-A for placements within the two years after graduation. Last year, the number of entrepreneurs in the batch nearly doubled to eleven after this announcement, making IIM-A students among the most adventurous in the world, on par with top US Ivy League schools in terms of percentage of entrepreneurs in the batch.
