IIM Ahmedabad: In a League of its Own

Kunal Upadhyay, who heads the Centre for Innovation, Incubation & Entrepreneurship (CIIE) at IIM-A, puts it aptly, "In recent times, the focus of students has risen above PPOs and job offers to starting their own ventures, joining start-ups and realizing their dreams." Given that these students are going to be

instrumental in shaping the country’s future, it is imperative they get going on their task right from the very beginning!

The excellence of the IIMA placement process is fairly well-documented, and now even foreign students who visit the campus on exchange are willing to subscribe to it. Diane Gabriel, one such exchange student who has had a fascinating time at IIM-A opines, "As a French IIMA-ESSEC dual-degree student, I intend to sit for placement at IIM-A because it offers great professional opportunities both in India and abroad. The companies that come to the campus are among the world's best and the roles that they offer are as diverse and challenging as they come." The fact that students from highly rated schools like ESSEC favour the IIM-A placement procedure to their own is an unequivocal comment on the high regard in which the IIM-A brand name is held abroad.

Meanwhile, IIM-A continues to be the preferred recruitment destination for all top firms. Even in the face of the recent sub-prime crisis and the economic downturn, as firms look to prune their numbers, if there is one thing which stands tall, unaffected by these events, it is Placements at IIM Ahmedabad. The biggest firms are all too aware of not compromising on quality in their drive to reduce the quantity of manpower. Only this can explain the phenomenon being witnessed in IIM-A this year where a large number of dream recruiters have issued Pre-Placement Offers to all the summer interns hired by them. For instance, top consulting firms like McKinsey and Co. and Bain and Co., along with leaders in the investment banking industry such as Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank among other prominent firms have extended full-time offers to all their summer interns from IIM-A. With the number of Pre-Placement Offers mounting to 79, the Class of 2008 is on a roll already!

If these instances are anything to go by, IIM-A is on the verge of yet another fruitful year in terms of placements.
