BIM Trichy Students Win IMAGINE CUP - A Microsoft-sponsored Global Competition Team 'RECOMPU' Another B-Plan entry from BIM to reach the Finals of Imagine Cup 2005 was 'Recompu', a team consisting of Mayur Mayank & S. R. Vidhya. The team made it to the top 30 and was awarded certificates of merit, in recognition of their contribution. Their work will also be featured in the History section of the Imagine Cup event. 'Recompu' is an initiative to recycle computers and cater to the needs of low end users. The central theme of this business plan is to make a standard PC an economically viable option for people on the lower strata of the digital gap. Recompu is an initiative to procure outdated computers from Corporate and Government organizations and recycle them for the low-end market. The major objectives of Recompu are: -
India has the ability to absorb 10-20 million PCs a year for the next several years. The huge demand for computers is coupled with the fact that there is also a considerable number of PCs being outdated and obsolete. Hence, recycling PCs provide an attractive business option and the size of this opportunity (market) is over Rs. 300 crore, which remains largely untapped. The mass appeal factor of second-hand PCs is amplified by the fact that they can be made available at prices ranging from Rs. 5000 to Rs. 15000. Also, Recompu will recycle PCs by procuring outdated PCs from various sources, de-manufacturing them and segregating the components, disposing the e-waste and finally remanufacturing the PCs for sale in the low-end market. Operating units can be set up in the suburbs of Chennai, Hosur and Noida and further expand operations after consolidating its position in the market. Concluded.
